Overview

A tileset made of 8x8 pixel tiles to try and emulate a Gameboy era style. Feel free to use these tiles for anything you want, personal project, commercial project, random artistic shit-post of twitter, whatever you feel like. Modify it, add to it, go nuts!

No credit required, but if you do use it I'd love to see what you're using it for so feel free to shoot me a link.

Content

The tileset tries to provide enough to make interesting but simple environments for a side-scrolling platform style environment. The set contains the following tiles.

  • 12x brick tiles (floors, walls, corners).
  • 12x Dirt tiles (floors, walls, corners).
  • Standard Doorway (2x2 tiles, locked, closed, open).
  • Boss door  (2x3 tiles, closed, open).
  • Ladder tiles (regular and broken).
  • Large vine (3 variation tiles).
  • Chest (open and closed, 2x1 tiles).
  • Tillable chain.
  • Tillable platform.
  • Pillar platforms (pillar on tile, and half tile offset).
  • Floor Spikes.
  • Animated Torch/Firepit (4-frames).
  • Animated water surface (4-frames).
  • Lever Switch (left and right).
  • Background textures (for bricks and dirt).
  • Coin(3 frames).
  • Key.
  • UI icons (heart, keys, coins).
  • Various decoration tiles (small roots, hanging vines, small rock, etc).

Sprites provided at 1x, 2x, and 4x scale. In both uniform size (everything is an 8x8 sprite) and NonUniform (things like doors are 16x16 as single sprite for example).

Aseprite files included for both the tile set and the example rooms shown.

Palette

These assets were created using the 2Bit Demichrome palette by Space Sandwich:

NOTE: The water drip effects and the text item from the Examples are purely example, and whilst they can be sourced from the example files, they are not part of the tileset, due to how situational that kind of thing is (length of drop for example).

Could there be more tiles? Absolutely. Whilst working on the set I decided that an 8x8 grid of 8x8 tiles was just somehow pleasing to the brain space so I went with that limitation. This is the first art asset I've actually released so I welcome any sort of feedback in terms of the assets themselves, the packaging of the assets, etc.
